For some time now mobile network providers have been giving away free sim cards to all who apply.

On the face of it, this seems a great idea, from a customers perspective. If you have an old phone lying around the place, why not stick in a replacement sim card and use it as a spare?

Unfortunately, things are not quite that simple! For example, if you use a PAYG (pay as you go) sim, then there is often an expiry date on your card. That means, if you do not use your credit within a set period (usually one to three months) then you will lose it :-(

So, if you do not plan to use your phone very often, then you need to look into this aspect of the tariff.

Also, consider the call charges, it is all very well getting a free sim card, but, the price of calls on a handset with reasonable use will soon offset the nominal £10 cost of some of the paid sim cards. In particular, check out what the call charges are to other networks, as this is where cheap PAYG sim cards can suddenly become very expensive!

Also look at other options, such as roaming, which many free sims to not allow.

Other than that, free sims are a great way to turn your obsolete handset into a spare!
