When looking at free mobile phone deals, particularly those offering 12 months free line rental they want to know where the catch is!
After all, where is the profit in a 12 months free line rental deal… the handset is free… the minutes are free… the text messages are free… where is the catch?
There are a couple of ways mobile phone retailers profit from 12 months free line rental deals:
1) You do not choose an appropriate contract. This means you end up buying additional minutes / texts which may not be at a good rate. However, you may be able to upgrade your contract with your mobile phone network (its always worth asking).
2) You forget to claim your cash back on the 12 months free line rental deal! This is by far the biggest catch! With a 12 months free line rental deal you are given specific dates on which you need to claim your cash back, for example in months 9, 10 and 11. If you fail to claim this cash back on time then you lose it! Some companies actually say that if you fail to claim the first months cash back, you cannot claim subsequent ones, though, most are not that bad!
The only other way you can lose out with 12 months free line rental deals is if the mobile phone retailer go’s bust before your payout. I am only aware of one person this has happened to, but, it is a possibility.
It is important to remember, that, with a 12 months free line rental deal, it is the retailer who provides the cash back not the network with whom you have your contract.
As long as the retailer is reputable, and you remember to claim your cash back, there is nothing wrong with 12 months free line rental deals. Lots of people take advantage of these deals and “beat the system”.
As long as you are organised, making a note of when you need to claim your cash back, then you will be fine!
