If you have an old mobile phone sitting around, did you know that you can recyle it in an environmentally friendly way?

The first benefit of selling your old phone is clear, you make some money out of it! Depending on the model of phone you can get over £100 for an old mobile phone, though, older models may only be worth £5 or so.

The second benefit is environmental. If a phone can be re-used by someone else, that effectively saves another brand new handset having to be produced. This means that less plastics, energy and toxic chemicals are used.

If the phone cannot be re-used by someone else, then it needs to be disposed of safely. As mentioned, toxic materials are used to produce mobile phones, as well as the batteries contained within them. You should never send a mobile phone to landfil for this reason.

If the phone can be re-used, then indirectly you are helping someone else by making a more affordable handset available to them.

If you phone cannot be re-used, but can be recycled then components may be recovered and re-used. Another interesting fact is that precious metals can also be recovered from the old phones. In fact, a tonne of mobile phones contains up to seventeen times more gold than a tonne of gold ore!

Many people are confused as to why anyone would pay cash for their old mobile phone, particularly if it is an older obsolete model. The answer is simple, the old models are shipped abroad to emerging markets where they still have value / are in demand. In these countries there is a lot of demand for mobile phones and they will hapily pay cash for a re-furbished mobile phone as opposed to paying extra for a new one.

The great thing about recycling mobile phones in this way is that every one comes out a winner. You make cash from your old mobile phone. The company that buys it also makes some money, either from recovering precious metals, or selling the phone on to buyers in other countries for re-use. Customers in emerging markets benefit from cheaper used handsets being available, and the environment benefits from there being less new phones produced as a result.

So, if you have an old phone sitting around, why not recycle it?
