The biggest problem for many people considering a free line rental deal is the issue of trust. As you have to pay for your contract up front (i.e. pay the bill as normal for 12 months) there is a risk (quite a high one) that you will not get the refund required to cover the cost of your deal.
So, can you trust retailers offering these 12 month free deals? To a point the answer has to be yes, as these retailers are bound by the terms and conditions they give you, along with the trade descriptions act and other forms of legislation. They cannot sell something they have no intention of delivering, at least not blatently!
The main risk (other than failing to read the small print) for a potential customer of one of these deals is whether the company is likely to go out of business.
Over the past year a couple of companies that had been selling 12 month free deals have in fact gone bankrupt. If this happens you have very little chance of getting your money back.
However, companies like E2Save have quite a good reputation, and, are part of the wider “Carphone Warehouse” organisation. They are the biggest online mobile phone retailer and have been offering these deals for some time.
If you choose a large, robust company that has remained solvent for several years, and you read the small print, then you should be ok!
I personally know someone who lost out due to bankruptcy this year, although disappointed with this years result, over the preceding three years he ran completely cost free mobile phones, so is pragmatic about it, and is already planning on getting another 12 month free deal next year!
