nokia_8310.jpgI could not write about the 8210 without giving its younger sibling, the 8310 a mention! I had this exact handset (the grey one) and loved it! Like the 8210 it was very neat and compact. It had a more sturdy feel to it than the 8210 also, but was a little more bulky, possibly due to the inclusion of an FM radio.

The 8310 was the first phone I remember seeing with an FM radio fitted, and I absolutely loved the style and appearance of this phone. I suppose it was a bit cheesy with the LED backlit keypad, but in its day it was different, modern and higly desirable.

I actually still have this phone, though the power button broke, and, like the 8210 would love to see Nokia produce a small handset like this again.

For me this marked the Zenith of Nokias achievements. They produced a couple of other smart, sleek looking handsets after this, which introduced colour screens and polyphonic tones, and subsequently cameras (with the 7 series). However, these features were Nokias downfall.

Nokia had only really produced bar style phones, which were fine as long as you did not need a large display area. With the introduction of cameras, and multimedia features, so the demand rose for larger screens. Nokia simply could not accomodate these screens neatly on their handsets and they began to lose popularity.

The handsets they began making were ugly, tiny buttons cramped below an awkwardly shaped screen. They did briefly try to make some flip style phones, but they were inferior to those of other manufacturers.

It is only the advent of touch scren phones and slider phones that have (in my opinion) really allowed Nokia to start recapturing their lost glory. I think with these new desisgns / structures they can once again dominate, though, their interfaces are not quite as well designed as they once were.

nokia8210.jpgIn my last post I mentioned that teh Nokia 2630 was the smallest Nokia since the 8210, so I thought I would remind those of you old enough to remember just how Nokia earned their reputation, and, for a while absolutely trounced all other manufacturers!

Whilst other manufacturers such as Motorola were producing bulky clam shell / flip style handsets with poor reception, Nokia were belting out bar style handsets that were easy to use, had good battery life, good reception and looked good!

They were producing quality that other manufacturers just could not match, and, in my opinion the 8210 was one of the defining moments in that part of Nokias history. They produced the smallest neatest handset I have ever owned.

The one criticism I had of this handset was that it did feel a little flimsy, however, it never cracked anywhere and it lasted several years being past amongst friends and relatives, in the days when there were no decent PAYG handsts at an affordable price.

The handset was very basic by modern standards, predictive text, monocrome display, standard ring tones etc. But it did have voice recognition for dialling numbers.

I remember amusing my friends trying to demonstrate this after a few drinks… it could not recognise my slightly drunken tones and refused to dial! But, on the whole it worked.

If Nokia made a phone as small, neat and functional as that today I would buy one. To hell with all the features, I like phones that I do not know I am carrying, and IMO nothing has ever rivalled the 8210 in that respect!

If you are quick you can get a 12 month contract on T-Mobile Combi 30 with 300 cross network minutes and two hundred text messages per month and a free Nokia 2630 with £230 automatic cash back.

With an automatic cash back deal tehre is no need to make a claim, not “tricky” terms and conditions, paperwork to send of, dates to adhere to etc. You are guaranteed to receive the cash back with your mobile phone. Your payment will automatically be deposited into your account.

In essense, this is a straight substitute for the free gift offers that retailers commonly make, by way of “compensation” for accepting an older handset, as opposed to going for one of the more expensive and later models.

The Nokia 2630 is a fantastic little handset and is the slimmest and lightest handset Nokia have made since the 8210 (what a classic that was!). The 2630 is just under 1cm thick and weighs in at a measely 66 grams! It is a basic functional handset that concentrates on getting the job (of making calls / sending texts) done, without trying to wow customers with excessive feature lists.

It has a pretty good colour TFT display, an FM radio, Bluetooth and a VGA camera. It supports GPRS and is equipped with a web browser, an email client and MMS messaging.

If value for money, practicality and ease of use are more important to you than the latest gizmo’s then this could be the deal for you!

There are lots of retailers in the UK offering free line rental deals. However, they do not all offer these deals at the same time. Each runs different promotions at different times, meaning you really have to check them all, or use our comparison service to check them for you.

The most active retailers in the free line rental sector are mobiles2yourdoor and e2save (who I believe are part of Carphone Warehouse).

The next most active companies are Buy Mobile Phones and the new kid on the block Beepy. Although a relative newcomer to the market (at least in terms of there presense in our comparision tables) Beepy have been competing hard in the free line rental sector.

Another company that occasionally offers free line rental is Mobiles.co.uk. Mobile Rainbow used to be a good site for free line rental deals, however, I believe these are one of the companies which actually went bust recently. Looking at their site I think it is safe to say they are no longer trading, as they seem to be offering a comparison service of their own, promoting their former competitors!

In terms of comparison sites there are a couple of good ones. Free Line Rental Mobiles, Best Contract Mobile and Mobile Shop all offer a similar service to this site!

Dial A Phone occasionally offer free line rental deals as do E4s and 3 Mobile Shop.

Some lesser know sites listing free line rental comparisons, which may be worth a look if the others have all drawn a blank are Orange Mobile Shop, Free 3g Mobile Offers, Online Mobile Phone Shop, Free Contract Mobile Phone and Free Contract Mobiles though, to be honest these sites do not add any value that the others previously mentioned do not.

If you are not interested in a free line rental deal, but are looking for a bargain, then you would be well adviced to check out the clearance offers at carphone warehouse.

So there you have it, pretty well the entire UK free line rental market on one page… we hope you find it useful, though, we would be grateful if you would check our own comparison tables too!

Did you know you can get a free 12 month mobile?

If you did not then check our comparison tables for the latest offerings.

We list thousands of mobile phone deals every day, which are updated every few hours!

Due to the way we structure our results, you will see any available 12 month free deals at the top of the page, with a zero cost value!

These deals are genuine, you really can get a 12 month free mobile, however, you need to properly understand how the deals work in order to take advantage of them.

There are many articles on the subject to be found on this site, in addition, check the dealers sites directly, in particular, the terms and conditions.

Currently we are listing deals from some of the biggest retailers in the UK, e2save, and mobiles2yourdoor are offering the best free deals at the moment.

We also list deals direct from the networks (orange for example) so, you can be sure we will provide you with a comprehensive comparison!

If you are interested in getting a phone with a free gift click here! If you want our opinion on whether they represent good value then keep reading!

Offering free gifts with a phone is no different to getting cash back. If you get cash back, then you can buy whatever you want, so, I am not really sure why you would want to opt for a free gift, unless the value of that gift was greater than the amount you could get on a cash back deal.

Secondly, how much are you actually paying for this “free gift”? The fact is, deals offering free gifts or cashback are going to be charging you more for your deal, that is how they absorb the cost. To work out this cost, see how cheaply you could get the same handset / tariff for without the free gift, and calculate the difference. You may well find that you are actually paying more in additional line rental costs than you could buy the item for.

Another think to think about is “do I need this price plan”. By that I mean, are you ordering what you need in a phone contract, or are you “over ordering” to get the free gift. If you are over ordering, then, you are probably wasting your money.

When is a Free Gift Mobile Deal Right For Me?

  • If you are going to buy the gift anyway
  • If you are going to order the same number of inclusive texts and minutes anyway
  • If the value of the gift is greater than the amount of cashback you could get on the same deal
  • If you are prepared to trade the latest handset for a free gift
  • That last point is the most important thing to bear in mind. For example, if you need a lot of inclusive minutes, you are going to be paying a lot for your contract regardless. Now, on an expensive contract it will be possible to get the latest handset included free of charge. If you do not need an all singing all dancing handset, and are prepared to accept a cheaper / inferior model, then, it may be worth trading down your phone for the free gift.

Never use the free gift offered as your primary motive for taking out a contract. Always choose an appropriate handset / price plan at a competitive price, then, consider the various “sweetners” such as cashback or free gifts last of all.

    Good luck!

Ok I am a little biased here, as this site is actually a mobile comparison site as well as a blog.

However… this site, and many other comparison sites list tens of thousands of deals from a multitude of providers, covering all of the major networks.

Using one of these sites you can find pretty well any handset you want, on any tariff, all from the comfort of… wherever you have access to the internet.

Even if you do not buy via a comparison site, they can give you a great indication as to what you should expect to get for your money, which you can use to beat down competitors prices!

One word of caution though, do not take prices from a comparison site into your local high street store and expect them to match the deal (though some may just do that). Retailers are generally not too keen on that sort of thing.

The term for this is “channel conflict”, where one sales “channel” interferes with another. In this instance, a high street retailers online division may cause problems regards peoples expectation on the high street.

You have to bear in mind that the high street retailers have more overheads to cover. The cost of premises, sales staff etc. With online sales they do not incur as many of these costs, and so are able to sell online at a rate which is below the high street price.

For this reason, companies that advertise “online prices in store” are rarely as they seem. In fact, it is more often the case that they have the “in store price online” meaning their websites are actually more expensive than the genuine E-tailers.

So, in essence, there are two reasons to use a comparison site:

  • For convenience / saving time researching the best deal
  • For a better price, because, 90% of the time the best deals are onlineconvenience / saving time researching the best deal

  • The latest Symbian Smartphone has been released on the 3g network, available in two colours:

  • Nokia E71 White
  • Nokia E71 Grey
  • The Nokia E71 features a 2.4 inch display and a full QWERTY keypad. It is surprisingly slim at just 10mm thick making it very comfortable to carry. This is the first time Nokia have produced anything that begins to rival the BlackBerry, and is certainly worthy of consideration by anyone looking for this kind of device.

The E71 has a built-in GPS receiver pre-loaded with the latest Nokia Maps 2.0 application, meaning it is ready to go out of the box. This is great software which not only assists in navigation, but points out the best restaurants and shops in a given area.

The E71 supports Email messaging and is highly configurable allowing the use of all the major “free mail” services, such as Google Mail, Hotmail and Yahoo. It also has support for Microsoft exchange, which would be of use to business customers.

The Nokia E71 smart-phone is equipped with a 3 mega-pixel auto-focus camera, which is a little disappointing given the fact that most phones in the price bracket now offer 5 mega pixels, but, that said the camera is perfectly adequate.

The Nokia E71 is a 3G phone with HSDPA for high speed data downloads. It also has Wi-fi connectivity, which is great for browsing the web or accessing emails when in a Wi-fi area.
