Well, that didn’t take long! Mobile broadband sticks have only been on sale for a short while, and have only really taken off in the last few months, and already it is possible to get cash back on them!
Dialaphone, Mobiles.co.uk (carphone warehouse) and Mobile Express are already fighting it out with their instant cashback mobile broadband deals!
Currently the level of cashback on offer is pretty small, between £30 and £60, but that amount is only going to go one way!
As with all forms of cashback, these incentives are a way for retailers to compete on sales of similar products. They cannot reduce the montly rental you pay to the provider. They cannot reduce the initial amount you pay to the provider. Instead, they hand back a portion of their commission, so it works something like this:
The retailer sells you the mobile broadband package
The retailer gives you the cashback
The network provider pays the retailer the full commissoin for the deal
Again, this is simply a mechanism for retailers to compete amongst themselves on a product they have no control over (in terms of price).
I do not expect these deals to ever extend to the point free rental deals have on mobile phones, simply due to the fact that there is little difference in value between the modems. With a mobile, there is a huge price differential between high end and budget phones. Free rental deals take advantage of this, offering budget handsets + cash back on high cost tariffs, as opposed to giving away a free high end handset. That situation simply does not exist with the broadband modems, they are all pretty well the same… so it is likely the cashback amounts will remain relatively small.

BlackBerry have an outstanding reputation when it comes to smart phones and communication devices. There latest addition to the family, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 runs the new BlackBerry 4.6 operating system on a powerful 624 MHz processor.
As can be expected from BlackBerry the phone has Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera, media player, web browser, media player with DivX support, a Qwerty keyboard, trackball mouse and a 3.5mm stereo audio socket.
In terms of data transfer the BlackBerry 9000 Bold suports Wi-fi, 3G, tri-band HSDPA and quad-band GSM.

You can now get the Nokia 2630 with a whopping £265 instant cash back. There is no need to go through a difficult claims process to get this deal, the money will be paid to you automaticaly, guaranteed!
As with all instant cashaback deals, you are effectively trading down your handset in return for the cash option, so, it is to be expected that the 2630 is quite a basic handset, but, if you are after a practical, no nonsense easy to use mobile then this would make a good choice.
The 2630 weighs in at just 66 grams and is one of Nokias lightest ever phones. It is super slim at less than a centimeter thick. The dimensions of this handset are 105 x 45 x 9.9 mm with a total volume of just 45cc!
The Nokia 2630 is 2g enabled (GSM 900 / 1800) and is therefore does not offer high speed downloads / internet access. If you need mobile internet access, consider a different handset, or, use your cashback to purchase a mobile broadband USB stick (see link in header). That said, it can be used for basic communications as it supports MMS, SMS, Instant Messaging and Email, and has a WAP 2.0/xHTML browser, though, being honest, WAP is pretty well defunct these days.
A basic VGA camera is integrated (stills 640×480 video128 x 96 pixels) with this phone, but it does not withstand comparison with the latest models, which now boast up to eight megapixels. An FM radio is included, and polyphonic / mp3 ringtones are supported, however, there is no MP3 music player.
The phone book can store an impressive 1000 entries, with dialled, received and missed calls each storing the last 20 records.
The 2630 has built in hands free, and it is bluetooth enabled so you should be able to add a wireless headset (please double check this before ordering!).
There are a few other basic features such as a calendar, calculator, currency converter.
This phone would be ideal for someone who is self employed and on the move. This is due to the fact it is robust, low cost and does a good job when it comes to what mobiles were invented for… making calls! It has 310 hours standby time and 6 hours talk time, again, making it suitable for basic business use.

LG have now announced that they are soon to release an 8 megapixel touch screen handset to succeed the viewty, and to rival the Samsung i8510. Of course, looking at the sleek touch screen design, LG are also hoping to compete with the the i-phone.
It is difficult to ascertain quite how the KC910 will function but by all accounts it will not be dissimilar from the Viewty. Looking at the pre release photographs, it is going to have a smart sleek appearance, but we cannot help feeling, even by looking at this shot that it looks a little cheap compared to the i-phone or Samsung i8510. However we will have to wait until the phone is released to find out for sure. Also, it is probably not fair to criticise its appearance based on comparisons with the i-phone, as LG tend to compete on functionality / affordability rather than aesthetics.
According to Mobile Cowboys this handset is due to be released in October, but they did not say which territories were to be included in that release. Also, the article was filed under “mobile rumours”, so, take from that what you will! That said Phone Arena also mention a release date of October. Furthermore, according to SoftPedia more 8 megapixel phones are set for release this year, with the Sony Ericsson C905 boasting 8.1 Mega Pixels and a planned release from Motorolla, which will also reportedly have 8 megapixels, according to (Boy Genius), and of course the aforementioned Samsung i8510.
The KC910 Specification is Said to Include
A Touch Screen WQVGA 240×400 display
Quad-band GSM, UMTS (High Speed Download Packet Access 7.2 Mbps)
An 8 Megapixel camera featuring:
Xenon flash
Digital image stabilization
A lens by Schneider-Kreuznach
Face recognition including smile and blink detection
Auto or manual focus
VGA video capture at a reta of 30 frames per second
QVGA capture of up to 120 frames per second

Samsung’s 8 Mega Pixel Camera!
Yes you heard right, Samsung have packed the i8510 with fully integrated 8 mega pixel camera. To put this into perspectivce, my two year old Digital SLR camera does not have that kind of resolution, and that is a good quality, dare I say, semi professional camera!
Of course we all know that resolution does not = quality, and there are many other factors to take into consideration, such as the lens quality. However, there is no denying that, in terms of mobile photography, Samsung have significantly raised the bar with this phone!
Other features of the camper include:
- Auto Focus
- Face Detection
- Blink Detection
- high resolution video (120 frames per second)
Samsung i8510 Form:
The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 is a great looking handset, we really like the super sleek styling on this handset, and the easy to use navigation. It is a slider style design. The default display is a little lack luster as the screen appears almost monochrome. Whilst this has a slightly retro, stylish feel to it, it does not compare well with some of the competing hi res / high color interfaces sported by competing handsets.
Samsung i8510 Function:
Other features of the i8510 include High Speed Download Packet Access Connectivity for mobile broadband usage. It has Wi-Fi allowing you to save money on your internet connection when near a “hotspot” or when at home (assuming you have WiFi installed at home).
The Samsung i8510’s operating system is the Symbian Series 60, which offers a larger range of customisable options are present, along with increased support for third-party software products.
The i8510 also has a built in GPS receiver, Bluetooth v2.0, Internal Memory of 8GB along with an MP3 player.
Overall, this is a great handset, and certainly one worth considering given the competitive prices available.

If you are a heavy mobile business user then you would be well advised to take advantage of IP telephony to cut out your bills! Skype are the leading provider of IP telephony and with the S2 have added a lot more features and applications to their IP phone. The 3 Skypephone did the job ok, but it was often criticised for being too basic, responding to this, Skype have added a wealth of additional features. The Skypephone S2 features and improved display which makes a big difference. Download speeds have also been increased with the addition of HSDPA. A really useful feature of the Skype S2 is that it is supplied with Windows drivers allowing it to be used as a Modem. Once set up, you can connect the S2 to your laptop and use it in a similar way to a USB broadband Modem, however, be careful if you do this as data transfers on standard mobile contracts can be expensive. If you plan on using mobile broadband a lot then you may still be better off with a mobile broadband package / USB modem.
The S2 is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera and 50MB of internal memory. The memory can be expanded to 4GB via a MicroSD expansion slot.
The S2 is available free on contracts starting at just from just £15 per month, which will give you free calls to other Skype users from anywhere in the word!
Of course these Skypephones are also compatible with the standard mobile networks and this deal offers 300 text messages and 300 minutes of talk time per month.

The new Nokia 5000 is a very easy to use phone. It has prety basic features, and is a very functional handset.
The Nokia 5000 benefits from:
A 2 inch display
An FM radio
Email support
The Mini4 Opera Web Browser
A 1.3 megapixel camera
Bluetooth Support
An Mp3 player
It would be fair to describe the 5000 as a “bare bones” handset when comparing it to the new generation of smart phones, however, to make up for this O2 are offering a range of free gifts when you order a 5000 on a 12 month contract.
The tariffs in question cost £25 per month with a choice of the following:
The iPod nano 8GB
An iPod Touch
An iPod classic
A Satellite Navigation System
A Set of GHD hair straighteners
A Nintendo DS
A Sony PSP
A 19 inch HDTV
Alternatively you can opt for one of the cash back options which bring the average total cost of this handset (with 200 minutes and 200 text messages) down to a mere £12.50 per month!
Lately there have been a lot of promotions of free Acer and Toshiba laptops, as well as HP machines, but few companies seem to promote Free Fujitsu Siemens Laptop Mobile Deals as much.
I thought I would change that as, I have a Fijitsu Siemens Laptop myself and swear by it! I have had my Siemens laptop for almost five years and it is still going strong, and it has seen some heavy use!
Fijutsu are always cost competitive, and I have found the build qualtity to be good. In my opinion Toshiba and Fujitsu have the best build quality of any entry level manufacturer. Acer on the other hand have a flimsier feel, but, they usually offer good performance for the money, and I have seen some clever design features on Acers, such as top mounted fans, which do not get covered when the machine is on your lap!
I would put HP somewhere in the middle, I have used their business machines and found them to be excellent, but, their budget machines are not quite so good. But, back to Fujitsu Siemens!
If you check our listings of Free Fujitsu Laptops you will find some pretty good machines.
One I was looking at earlier offered:
* Intel Celeron Processor M550
* 2GHz Clock Speed
* Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Basic
* 80Gb Hard drive
* 1Gb Memory
* 15.4″ Widescreen Display
* Wireless Enabled
* 4 USB Ports
Which the reatailer valued at £349. That is not a bad spec for an entry level machine, and should be more than enough for any “non gamer” to work on / browse the internet.
I think the valuation (based on SRP) is a little high as I would now expect 2GIG of memory for that price. Also, the processer is a bit weak, but, this is a freebie!
Lets say for the sake of argument that the laptop is only worth £300 if you shop around online. That is £25 per week spread over a 12 month contract. The mobile phone deals these laptops are offered on provide 600 cross network minutes for £40 per month, with a basic handset like a Motorola KRZR K1, Samsung E250 or an LG KG800 Chocolate.
Taking off the value of the laptop, that means you are paying £15 per month for a reasonable handset and a lot of minutes, a pretty good deal in my opinion.

For a very limited time you can get a Sony Ericsson C902 with six months half price line rental!

To make the camera easier to use Sony Ericsson have added touch sensitive icons on the screen to help you find essential phone settings such as the flash. The camera takes pretty good pictures and is easy to use.
The Ericsson C902 is a 3g enbled handset capable of fast data transfer via “High Speed Downlink Packet Access” (mobile broadband).
The “half price line rental” offered on these handsets is subject to claiming cash back on the deal. The amount of cash back is equal to three months line rental, or six months half price line rental
