Offering free gifts with a phone is no different to getting cash back. If you get cash back, then you can buy whatever you want, so, I am not really sure why you would want to opt for a free gift, unless the value of that gift was greater than the amount you could get on a cash back deal.
Secondly, how much are you actually paying for this “free gift”? The fact is, deals offering free gifts or cashback are going to be charging you more for your deal, that is how they absorb the cost. To work out this cost, see how cheaply you could get the same handset / tariff for without the free gift, and calculate the difference. You may well find that you are actually paying more in additional line rental costs than you could buy the item for.
Another think to think about is “do I need this price plan”. By that I mean, are you ordering what you need in a phone contract, or are you “over ordering” to get the free gift. If you are over ordering, then, you are probably wasting your money.
When is a Free Gift Mobile Deal Right For Me?
That last point is the most important thing to bear in mind. For example, if you need a lot of inclusive minutes, you are going to be paying a lot for your contract regardless. Now, on an expensive contract it will be possible to get the latest handset included free of charge. If you do not need an all singing all dancing handset, and are prepared to accept a cheaper / inferior model, then, it may be worth trading down your phone for the free gift.
Never use the free gift offered as your primary motive for taking out a contract. Always choose an appropriate handset / price plan at a competitive price, then, consider the various “sweetners” such as cashback or free gifts last of all.
