Overview of Toshiba:
Toshiba is based out of Japan and makes many different types of consumer goods. In 1875, Tanaka Seizo-Sho, also known as Tanaka Engineering Works, became the first Japanese manufacturer of telegraphic equipment. Hisashige Tanaka was the company’s founder, and from youth, he had been creating items such as mechanical dolls and perpetual clocks. Soon, he created a company known as Shibaura Seisaku-Sho, or Shibaura Engineering Works, which became one of Japan’s first electrical apparatus manufacturers. Around 1890, Hakunetsu-sha & Co., Ltd. was making Japan’s incandescent lamps. Very soon, the company decided to diversify and therefore began to manufacture a variety of other consumer products, leading up to the company’s receiving the new name of Tokyo Denki, or Tokyo Electric Company, in 1899. Once 1939 rolled around, both companies, were leading in their fields, and they decided to merge together and form one company. Thus, Tokyo Shibaura Denki was formed, and it became known as Toshiba (probably short for Tokyo Shibaura). In 1978, the company took the official name of Toshiba and has been manufacturing even more consumer products since then.
