In 2008 there has been a lot of speculation that free line rental deals were dead and buried. This was brought about by some of the companies specialising in free line rental deals going bust, leaving their customers high and dry.

With the economy taking a turn for the worse, it became clear that retailers may no longer be able to offset the potential losses / risks associated with free line rental deals, adding further to the level of speculation.

Over the past few weeks however, there has been a resurgance in the free line rental deal with new retailers such as Beepy entering the free line rental market.

There is also the argument, that, with the economic downturn there may be increased demand for deals that offer the consumer a cost free means of running a mobile phone. The risk of course for retailers is that consumers become more determined to get their money back, reducing the margins of the retailers.

Over the next few months there is every possibility that more retailers will go under, however, what is clear so far is that the free line rental / cash back deals will not be going with them!
