Remember the bad old days of dial up modems? Remember how people used to get their browsers hijacked so that premium rate dialer’s were installed on their computers, and started connecting to premium rate lines in the Caribbean?

This is all some time ago now, as the introduction of broadband (ADSL) gave un-metered access, and there was no possibility of routing the service via another (premium rate) one.

Well, now those problems are back thanks to mobile broadband!

This time, it is not crooks installing dialers onto unsuspecting browsers PC’s (thankfully), it is people mis reading the terms and conditions on their mobile contracts!

The fact is, “unlimited broadband” is not unlimited out of the country, use it abroad and you are going to get into trouble!
Also, unlimited calls does not = unlimited broadband… that will get you in even more trouble!

Take a look at these poor unfortunates:

  • A solicitor known only as ‘Janet’There ran up a £4900 bill for downloading episodes of the Apprentice whilst in France

  • Ian Simpson from Darlington somewhat better with a £27,000 phone bill after using his 3g phone as a modem heaven knows what he was downloading… but it must have been BIG!!

  • Iayn Dobsyn from Manchester did a little better with a £31,000 mobile phone bill after using his 3g handset as a modem
  • So you have been warned! Do not take your mobile broadband stick out of the country unless you properly understand the charges that will be applied!
